When you want to say the real thing
The version you would say out loud if it were easier to.
Happy birthday to my grandmother. Every year I try to find a new way of saying the same thing, and every year I fail, so here is the plain version: you made my life better and you did it without ever asking for credit. I have watched you be patient when you had every right not to be, and generous when you were running low yourself. That is not a small thing. That is a whole personality built on purpose. I hope this year gives you room to breathe, people who show up for you the way you show up for everyone, and at least one day where nothing goes wrong at all.
